Apple orders over 10% more iPhones than last year ahead of Apple Intelligence debut
Ahead of the release of Apple Intelligence, Apple is anticipating strong demand for its upcoming AI-powered iPhones, informing suppliers to prepare components for a production run of approximately 88 to 90 million units. This surpasses the initial component orders for last year’s iPhone models, which totaled around 80 million.
Cheng Ting-Fang and Lauly Li for Nikkei Asia:
Apple is preparing for sales of its first iPhone with Apple Intelligence, which includes generative AI features. The company has announced it will host its flagship product launch event on Sept. 9.
Some component makers say they even received orders for more than 90 million units, though they added that the iPhone maker usually places a higher number of orders at first and later adjusts the amount after the product actually goes on sale.
Despite the healthy orders, Apple faces mounting challenges from rivals in the Chinese market, which contributed some 17% of its total revenue in the three months through March 30… Apple is also caught in the crossfire of U.S.-China tensions… “We are quite cautious over Apple’s robust orders, as we know the Chinese market is definitely going to provide tough competition due to geopolitics,” said an executive of one of the Apple suppliers.
